John Huntington's Control Geek web site, which is the best resource for information about show control.

John Huntington's 1990 Master's Thesis, which is what began his pursuit of the holy grail of show control. IMPORTANT NOTES: This was considerably edited by John to remove out-of-date and material duplicated in his published book "Control Systems for Live Entertainment," now in its third edition and certainly the more up-to-date and definitive text. Also, it must be remembered that the material that does remain represents the way things were done prior to 1990 and is made available for historical purposes only, definitely not as a 'how-to' manual! Finally, the copyright is still firmly held by John Huntington and permission must be obtained to copy any portion of the work.

Surround Sound and The Royal Exchange Theatre by Steven Brown - extracts from a presentation given on the OISTAT Scenofest Stage at the 2003 Prague Quadrennial. Steven's site is also an excellent one for theatre sound resources.

New York House of Wax by John Calhoun - article on the AudioBox installation at Madame Tussaud's, New York, Entertainment Design Magazine, April 2001

French Connections by Alex Artaud - article on the AudioBox installation in Lyon, France, Sound & Video Contractor Magazine, April 2001

Mirror Image by Rob Halliday - article on the AudioBox installation at Madame Tussaud's, New York, reprinted by permission of Lighting & Sound International , December 2000

Scream Machine by Brad Wieners - Wired Magazine, May 1999

Pan Fights to get in the Air by Julius Grafton, reprinted by permission of Connections Magazine, Australia

The following articles are by Professor Richard K. Thomas of Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, and most were originally published in Theatre Design & Technology magazine (the Journal of the US Institute for Theatre Technology.) Comments by Professor Thomas follow each listing.
Music As a Key
This contains the entirety of the article we submitted. The first half was rejected because "it is primarily about things that are of interest to directors and actors, not technicians and designers," while the second half was published, as "Mid Side Recording and Playback Techniques" in Theatre Design and Technology Journal 32.5 (1996): 41-45. Obviously, I feel quite strongly that the first part of the article should be of interest to composers and designers, too.

Dramatic Space and Time
Dramatic Space and Time - PowerPoint Lecture
This is a paper I gave at the Babelsburg Scenography Exposition in 2000. The PowerPoint Lecture might be more interesting with which to browse the concepts. There are a couple of ideas I still want to explore in it before formally seeking publication.

Approaching Sound Design for Period Plays
Theatre Crafts. January 1982
The editors for this article cut down a much longer article, and I was never at all happy with the editing, especially the last paragraph.

Recent Experiences in Acoustical Design

I think the Mister Z box article is peculiarly humorous and prophetic given twenty years to gestate...

A Vision of a Virtual Orchestra - .pdf file
First published late 1987. Reprinted and retitled "A Seasonal Sample" by Theatre Crafts Magazine. Hans van Bemmelen comments "Oddly enough, instead of replacing live music, the Radiophonic Workshop referred to in the article was actually closed a year or two ago."

The following article is by Peter Ruthven Hall, a sound designer in the UK, and was published in Theatre Design & Technology magazine (the Journal of the US Institute for Theatre Technology.) It was first presented at the 2000 OISTAT Scenography Commission Meeting, 19-23 August 2000 at Bregenzer Festspielhaus, Bregenz, Austria.
