AudioBox AB64 CobraNet Module Installation

updated 5 September 2005

The digital audio input / output capabilities of the AB64 are field upgradable to a maximum of 64 channels by adding plug-in CobraNet CM-1 modules. The AB64 chassis is illustrated in the drawings below. There are two locations where CM-1 modules may be installed above the CPU board in the back left corner of the unit. If one module is installed, it must be at location 1. The module at location 1 connects to matrix inputs and outputs 1 through 32. The module at location 2 connects to matrix inputs and outputs 33 through 64. Contact Richmond Sound Design with any questions regarding AB64 configuration.

General Instructions

THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS MUST BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT STATIC DISCHARGES DO NOT OCCUR WHEN HANDLING CM-1 MODULES. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE STATIC DISCHARGE PRECAUTIONS MAY CAUSE DAMAGE WHICH IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

1. WORK SHALL BE PERFORMED AT A STATIC-FREE WORKSTATION.

2. THE AB64 CHASSIS MUST BE CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO GROUND WHEN INSTALLING OR REMOVING MODULES. THE POWER SUPPLY CABLE DOES NOT GROUND THE AB64 CHASSIS; A WIRE MUST BE CONNECTED DIRECTLY FROM THE CHASSIS TO A GROUNDED POINT.

3. PERSONS HANDLING MODULES MUST DISCHARGE STATIC BY TOUCHING A GROUNDED SURFACE (SUCH AS THE GROUNDED AB64 CHASSIS) BEFORE OPENING PACKAGES CONTAINING MODULES AND BEFORE REMOVING MODULES FROM THE UNIT. PERSONS MUST EITHER WEAR A GROUNDED WRIST STRAP OR MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH THE GROUNDED AB64 CHASSIS DURING THE HANDLING OF MODULES.

4. STACKING CONNECTORS MUST BE GROUNDED TO DISCHARGE STATIC BEFORE THEY ARE INSERTED INTO MODULE SOCKETS.

IN ADDITION, CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO ENSURE ALL STACKING CONNECTOR PINS ARE LINED UP AND CONNECTED PROPERLY TO THE CORRESPONDING SOCKET BEFORE POWER IS APPLIED. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY CAUSE DAMAGE WHICH IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

Installing CM-1 Modules

Stacking Connector

Note that the stacking connector used with the CM-1 module is longer in the vertical dimension (0.828") than the stacking connector used with the DSP cards (0.672").

  1. Ground the AB64 chassis.
  2. Unplug the power cable from the unit and remove the top cover.
  3. Remove the plate coving the openings in the chassis where the CM-1 module or modules will go.
  4. Install the two hex standoffs into the holes in the CPU board near the back of where the CM-1 module will be installed. Tighten firmly but do not overtighten these standoffs.
  5. Discharge static from a stacking connector by touching all of the pins simultaneously to the grounded AB64 chassis. Plug the stacking connector into one of the two socket connectors on the bottom of the CM-1 module. Be sure the connector is fully seated and all connector pins are lined up with the corresponding holes in the socket connectors. It does not matter which end of the stacking connector goes into the socket connector on the DSP board being installed. Repeat with the second stacking connector.
  6. Plug the stacking connector pins from the CM-1 module into the sockets on the CPU board.
  7. Install (2) 4-40 x 1/4" machine screws through the AB64 rear chassis into the threaded openings in the CM-1 mounting plate. Tighten firmly but do not overtighten these screws.
  8. Install (2) 6-32 x 1/4" machine screws through the CM-1 circuit board into the hex standoffs. Tighten firmly but do not overtighten these screws.
  9. If a second module is being installed., repeat above steps.
  10. Power unit on. If the installation was successful, the LCD display on the front panel will indicate the number of installed channels of CobraNet Input / Output.
